News from June 2025!

What happened in June 2025 at Phyto-info… we'll tell you everything!

Hello everyone 🌿

The raspberry bush is a wild plant; it can be found outside cultivated gardens, in the same places as the bramble. They are both, in fact, part of the same family.

We know raspberries for their beautiful red color, but they used to be white! Yes, yes! If they are red today, it is because of Ida, one of the nymphs who took care of baby Zeus. As he was particularly unruly that day, Ida pricked her finger while picking a berry in an attempt to calm him down. Too late, the damage was done, Ida’s blood forever stained the pure white of the raspberry. It is from this day that the raspberry bush has also been nicknamed the “bramble of Mount Ida” or Rubus idaeus , its scientific name ✨

Nowadays, raspberries come in different colours, but from the point of view of the plant’s properties, the red one remains the undisputed star. The use of raspberry bush, and more specifically their leaves, is somewhat controversial, especially during pregnancy. In France, the approach is cautious and it is only used when birth is imminent, mainly as an aid to childbirth. So be careful if a happy event is on the way.

New books 👏

One of us paid a short visit to the National Conservatory of Perfume, Medicinal, Aromatic and Industrial Plants in Milly-la-Forêt in Essonne, and took the opportunity to bring back some beautiful photos of flowers and two books.

The first, The Good Plants, a modern approach to herbalism, written by Erin Lovell Verinder, published in 2022 by Éditions Ulmer, is a book for those who are starting out in the world of medicinal plants. It includes the most classic plants and how to prepare them.

The second, Wild Medicinal Plants, the 50 Essential Plants and Their Uses, written by Steffen Guido Fleischhauer and Astrid Sussmuth, published in 2021 by Éditions Ulmer, presents, in addition to medicinal properties, photos of each part of the plant important for its recognition (shape of the leaves, specificity of the flower, hairiness, stem, etc.). In addition, the book mentions some often overlooked specimens, such as wood betony or lungwort 🥰
